5 Instagram Updates Real Estate Agents Should Use Right Now

Ever feel like Instagram changes something new every time you open the app? This time, it’s actually worth paying attention. Instagram just quietly rolled out a handful of updates to how profiles and carousels work, and honestly, they might be some of the most useful changes we’ve seen in a while for real estate agents.

Here’s what’s new and exactly how to put each one to work!

1. Reorder Your Profile Grid

Your Instagram grid used to be stuck in chronological order, with pinned posts as the only workaround. Now you can drag and drop any post into any position.

How to use it: Think of your grid as a homepage, not a diary. Put your best listing photos, strongest client testimonials, or most-saved educational posts front and center. If you closed a great sale six months ago, but it still represents your brand well, it can live at the top of your profile again.

2. Add Captions to Individual Carousel Slides

Instead of one caption covering an entire carousel, you can now write unique text for each slide.

How to use it: This is a genuinely useful one for listings and education posts. On a home tour carousel, caption the exterior shot with the address and price, the kitchen with a renovation detail, and the backyard with a lifestyle note. On a “5 steps to get pre-approved” carousel, each slide gets its own clear, scannable caption instead of cramming everything into one paragraph up top. It also means more natural keywords spread across a single post, which helps with discoverability.

3. Edit Carousel Order After Publishing

You no longer have to delete and repost a carousel just to fix the sequence of photos or videos.

How to use it: Post first, refine later. If you realize the exterior shot should come before the floor plan, or a testimonial video would land better as slide two instead of slide five, just rearrange it. This also makes it easier to keep evergreen carousels (like “documents you need to buy a home”) accurate over time without losing the engagement the original post already built up.

4. Your Profile Is Becoming a Homepage, Not a Timeline

Taken together, these changes signal a bigger shift: Instagram profiles are moving away from being a chronological feed and toward being a curated landing page. With grid reordering and more control over how carousels present information, your profile now functions a lot like a website homepage would.

How to use it: Spend a few minutes actually auditing your profile like a visitor would see it. Is your bio clear about what you do and where you work? Are the first nine posts a good representation of your brand—a mix of listings, testimonials, and helpful tips? If someone found you through a referral and looked at nothing but your grid, would they book a call?

5. "Your Algorithm" Now Applies to the Main Feed

Instagram’s topic-preference tool, which lets users manually tell Instagram what they want to see more (or less) of, has expanded beyond Reels and Explore to the main feed itself.

How to use it: Encourage your followers and past clients to add topics like “real estate” or your specific market to their preferences. This can be a simple, free way to stay visible in their feed. It also reinforces why niching down matters: the more consistently your content sticks to local market updates, listings, and buyer/seller tips, the more likely Instagram is to recognize and keep showing you to the right audience.

Final Thoughts

None of these updates requires new equipment or a bigger content budget; they’re about using the platform’s own tools more intentionally. Start with your grid: rearrange it this week, so your best nine posts represent your brand, then apply per-slide captions to your next listing carousel and see if engagement moves.
